FCT teachers suspend strike after Wike’s intervention

Primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory have called off their ongoing strike following fresh commitments by the FCT Administration.

The decision was announced by the State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers after an emergency meeting held to review developments in the dispute, which began on April 20, 2026.

Addressing journalists on Sunday in Gwagwalada, the SWEC Chairman, Mr Abdullahi Shafa, said the resolution followed the intervention of the FCT Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike.

Shafa explained that the minister had approved a N5 billion monthly package aimed at resolving lingering issues affecting teachers.

“The minister approved the release of N2 billion monthly from FCT Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), plus N3 billion from the 10 per cent IGR accruing to the Area Councils, to implement the 40 per cent peculiar allowance and settle outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers,” he said.

He further noted that the minister had committed to addressing promotion concerns by engaging the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission. This, he said, would focus on removing the vacancy requirement tied to promotions and revisiting the 2024 promotion exercise.

Following the resolution reached with key stakeholders, Shafa said all affected teachers had been directed to return to classrooms on Monday, April 27.

He also stressed that no teacher should face victimisation for participating in the industrial action, warning that the union could reconsider its stance if the agreement is not implemented.

Shafa commended members for their unity throughout the strike and reaffirmed the council’s dedication to securing better welfare and working conditions for teachers in the FCT.
