Kano Deputy Governor Should Step Aside After Refusing to Defect — Commissioner

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has called on Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo to resign his position following his decision not to defect with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, Waiya said effective governance is anchored on loyalty, trust, and shared political direction, arguing that it would be difficult to sustain confidence in an executive team where key members no longer align politically.

According to him, continued participation of the deputy governor in executive council meetings raises concerns about confidentiality and collective responsibility within government.

Waiya said while the decision not to defect was Gwarzo’s personal choice, remaining in office under the circumstances was inconsistent with the principles of trust that underpin governance.

He added that resignation would be the most honourable option, stressing that political leadership requires unity of purpose and mutual confidence among top officials.

The commissioner’s remarks come in the wake of Governor Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC, a move that has triggered significant political realignments in the state.

Waiya described the governor’s decision as beneficial to Kano, noting that alignment with the ruling party at the federal level would open doors to increased development projects and federal interventions.

He also assured residents that the state government is taking concrete steps to address the ongoing emirate dispute through dialogue, adherence to the rule of law, and efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability.

Waiya said the administration remains focused on ensuring that political differences do not distract from governance or undermine the collective interests of the people of Kano State.
