Akoko-Edo Local Government Chairman Impeached, Vice Chairman Sworn In

The Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, Hon. Alabi Oshionogue, has been impeached by seven out of ten councilors, with the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ayodele Fatimbi, sworn in as the new council leader. The impeachment follows allegations of abuse of office, financial mismanagement, and disobedience to constituted authorities.

The impeachment letter, signed by councilors representing wards one, four, six, eight, nine, and ten, accused Oshionogue of embezzling council funds, engaging in anti-party activities, and acting in a high-handed manner. The seven councilors cited repeated disobedience and misuse of office as justification for removing him from leadership on January 28, 2026.

Oshionogue, however, denied wrongdoing, insisting that ongoing projects were active in all ten wards. The impeachment occurred after a failed attempt by the remaining three councilors to suspend the seven signatories, prompting the latter to take action independently at the Igarra headquarters.

Following the official declaration, Hon. Ayodele Fatimbi took the oath of office as the acting council chairman. This leadership change comes amid escalating tensions within the council and highlights ongoing disputes among local government officials over governance and accountability.
