Ryan Coogler’s Sinners Wraps Up West African Box Office Run with ₦775M

After 13 weeks in cinemas across West Africa, Ryan Coogler’s supernatural crime thriller Sinners has officially closed its theatrical run, earning a remarkable total of ₦775.8 million.

The film concluded its journey on July 17, 2025, and now ranks as the fifth highest-grossing film ever released in the region, excluding inflation adjustments.

Directed, produced, and written by Coogler, Sinners debuted with a strong ₦79.6 million opening weekend in Nigeria earlier this year. This impressive performance demonstrated the rising demand for genre films like horror and crime thrillers in African markets.

Set in Mississippi during the Great Depression, the film follows twin brothers—played by Michael B. Jordan—who return home to confront a lurking supernatural evil. The cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Jack O’Connell, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

With a global haul of $365.7 million, the film has earned more than four times its $90 million production budget. It now stands among the top five horror films globally in terms of box office earnings, alongside titles like It, Jaws, and The Exorcist.

In Nigeria, Sinners overtakes Spider-Man: No Way Home (₦750.2 million) and falls just behind Black Panther (₦818.1 million), making it the highest-grossing original (non-sequel) film of the decade.

Audiences praised the film’s themes of legacy and redemption, its haunting visuals, and its score. Its performance illustrates the growing influence of Hollywood storytelling on African moviegoers and a broadening acceptance of diverse narratives in the region’s film industry.
