BREAKING: Sanwo-Olu endorses deputy For Lagos governor
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor for the 2027 governorship election.
The announcement followed a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship seat before members of the State Executive Council and key party leaders.
Also present at the meeting were members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, including Musiliu Obanikoro and Ganiyu Solomon, among others.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described the endorsement as a unanimous decision by stakeholders, stating that Hamzat is prepared and capable of leading the state.
He said the deputy governor had informed party leaders of his intention to contest, adding that those present agreed that Hamzat is fit and well-prepared for the role and possesses a deep understanding of governance.
Sanwo-Olu highlighted Hamzat’s experience and their working relationship over the past seven years, describing him as a man of integrity, loyalty, commitment, and strong support.
He said he felt honoured that Hamzat personally informed him of his ambition to contest the governorship position.
The governor also acknowledged the role of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that he was instrumental in bringing both leaders together and shaping their political journey.
He described Hamzat as a capable leader who has been prepared for the responsibility, adding that he deserves the opportunity to govern the state.
Sanwo-Olu further explained that the meeting was part of a broader consultative process involving party leaders and government officials.
He said there was a consensus among stakeholders that the deputy governor is ready and qualified to take over leadership.
The development signals early alignment within the All Progressives Congress in Lagos as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
