Gumi denies backing bandits, threatens lawsuits
Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has denied allegations that he supports banditry in Nigeria, insisting that he is being deliberately misquoted in media reports and public discourse on insecurity.
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Saturday, the Kaduna-based cleric said his comments on how to address banditry have been distorted by individuals and groups with “ethnic and sectional interests.”
He stressed that any video, statement or message suggesting he supports, justifies or defends banditry does not originate from him.
Gumi, a retired army captain, reaffirmed his loyalty to Nigeria, saying he remains committed to peace and national unity.
He also warned that he would henceforth take legal action against any media organisation or individual responsible for spreading false or manipulated content about him.
The cleric urged the public to disregard what he described as “fake and doctored materials” circulating online, adding that misinformation was worsening tensions around insecurity in the country.
