Showmax to shut down streaming service April 30

Streaming platform Showmax will cease operations on April 30, 2026, marking the end of its current service after over a decade in the market.

The announcement was communicated to subscribers via email, outlining a transition timeline. According to the notice, March 31, 2026, will be the final day for subscription renewals or voucher redemptions, while new subscriptions will no longer be accepted from April 1.

Subscribers with active plans will still be able to stream content until their subscription expires or until the shutdown date, whichever comes first.

The company also hinted at a migration plan, stating that users will soon receive details on how to continue accessing content, particularly through DStv Stream.

The shutdown follows a strategic decision by Canal+, which acquired MultiChoice Group in 2025, to discontinue the platform as part of broader restructuring and cost-cutting efforts.

Launched in 2015 to compete with global streaming giants, Showmax had positioned itself as a leading African platform but struggled with rising losses and declining subscriber growth in recent years.

Despite the closure, MultiChoice said the move will not lead to job losses, adding that employees will be supported through transition arrangements.
