Osun Monarch Unveils Ijesa Hall of Fame, Honours Adesanya, Petinrin, Others

The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, has unveiled nominees for the maiden Ijesa Hall of Fame, recognising prominent individuals who have made lasting contributions to the development of Ijesaland in Osun State.

According to a statement released by the palace, the list—ratified by the Owa-in-Council—features distinguished late and living indigenes across business, education, security, agriculture and sports. Among those named are UFC star Israel Adesanya, former Chief of Defence Staff General Oluseyi Petinrin (retd), renowned musician IK Dairo, and industrial pioneers including Chief Lawrence Omole and Pa Folorunso Awomoolo.

Other honourees include Dame Yinka Obaleye, composer of the Ijesa anthem Prince Biodun Lufadeju, Professor Bolanle Awe, Prince Olu Awogboro, and the late Oba Oladele Olasore. The selection process was conducted by a seven-member committee appointed by the traditional council.

Oba Haastrup explained that the initiative was designed to honour individuals whose investments and service have positively impacted Ijesaland, while inspiring younger generations to pursue excellence. He added that the process was deliberately democratized to promote unity among Ijesa people.

The monarch warned that any recipient whose conduct tarnishes the image of Ijesaland after induction would forfeit the honour. He also noted that future editions would feature fewer inductees, with strict adherence to set criteria.

Since his installation in December 2024, Oba Haastrup has introduced initiatives aimed at economic growth, including large-scale mechanised farming and measures to curb land grabbing. The Ijesa Hall of Fame is expected to further project the region globally and encourage greater participation by indigenes at home and abroad.
