Atiku Warns Senate Delays Could Jeopardise 2027 Elections
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Nigerian Senate of stalling efforts to amend the Electoral Act, warning that continued delays could undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
In a public statement, Atiku argued that weaknesses in the existing Electoral Act contributed significantly to challenges witnessed during the 2023 elections, making it difficult for petitioners to successfully challenge disputed outcomes.
He said urgent amendments were required to close legal loopholes and strengthen the integrity of future elections.
Atiku alleged that the Senate was deliberately frustrating the passage of the amendment bill, describing the delay as a threat to democratic accountability.
According to him, failure to update the law ahead of the next general elections would amount to an attempt to compromise the electoral process long before voting begins.
The Electoral Act currently in force was enacted in 2022, and lawmakers are considering amendments intended to address shortcomings observed during the last election cycle.
