North Korea Voices Support for Iran’s New Supreme Leader

North Korea has officially stated its respect for Iran’s selection of a new supreme leader, while simultaneously accusing the United States and Israel of destabilizing regional peace. The statement follows the Islamic Republic’s announcement of Mojtaba Khamenei as the successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, who died in late February.

A spokesperson for Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry characterized the transition as a domestic right of the Iranian people and condemned external attempts to influence the nation’s political system. The official criticized Washington and Israel for “illegal acts of aggression” and warned that such actions undermine global stability.

The diplomatic support comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the latest test-firing of strategic cruise missiles from the naval destroyer Choe Hyon. State media reported that the tests are part of an ongoing effort to arm the North Korean Navy with nuclear capabilities to serve as a “powerful and reliable nuclear war deterrent.”

Images released showed Kim Jong Un monitoring the launch alongside his daughter, Ju Ae, who is increasingly viewed by international analysts as his intended successor. The missile test coincided with the commencement of “Freedom Shield,” the annual large-scale military exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea. Pyongyang has warned of “unimaginably terrible consequences” in response to these drills, which it views as a rehearsal for preemptive war.
