APC, Kwankwaso Trade Words Over Kano Governor’s 2027 Prospects
Former Kano State governor and NNPP leader, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has predicted that Governor Abba Yusuf will lose the 2027 governorship election following his defection to the All Progressives Congress.
Kwankwaso made the claim during a media interview, describing Yusuf’s decision as a betrayal of the political movement that brought him to power and warning that aligning with rival political blocs would weaken his electoral standing.
He said the public display of support from former governor Abdullahi Ganduje during the defection ceremony signalled political trouble for Yusuf, insisting that Kano voters would reject such alignment.
Kwankwaso maintained that the NNPP remains strong and united in Kano, dismissing claims that internal crises forced the governor’s departure.
The APC, however, rejected Kwankwaso’s assertions, expressing confidence that Yusuf would retain the governorship in 2027.
Party officials said the APC enjoys widespread support in Kano and argued that Ganduje’s backing has historically translated into electoral victories across several states.
Yusuf’s defection has triggered political realignments in Kano, including resignations by some government officials and lawmakers as preparations for the next election cycle gather momentum.
