Labour Party Shifts 2027 primaries over Sallah, Democracy Day celebrations

The Labour Party has adjusted its timetable for the 2027 general election primaries, moving the exercise to May 30, 2026, following a clash with the Sallah celebration and the Democracy Day anniversary.

The party initially scheduled its governorship and State House of Assembly primaries for May 27, while the presidential and National Assembly primaries were fixed for May 29. However, both exercises will now hold simultaneously on May 30.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Asogwa, confirmed the change in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, noting that the decision was taken to accommodate national and religious observances.

According to him, the adjustment was necessary due to the “spiritual significance of the Sallah celebration” and the “national importance” of the May 29 Democracy Day anniversary.

He added that the party considered it important to allow members, aspirants, and stakeholders adequate time to observe the national events without political disruption.

The statement read in part:
“We deemed it appropriate to adjust our schedule to enable members, aspirants, supporters, and Nigerians generally to fully observe these important occasions.”

Asogwa also expressed regret over any inconvenience the shift may cause, stressing that the decision reflects the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and national sensitivity.

With the new arrangement, all Labour Party primaries for both state and federal positions will now be conducted on a single day, May 30.
