Lagos taskforce launches full clampdown on street urchins 

The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified enforcement operations with a total clampdown on street urchins, popularly known as “Omotaku,” as part of its sustained zero-tolerance policy against criminal activities in the state.

In a recent operation carried out at Marwa Bus Stop in the Lekki axis, taskforce operatives arrested several suspected Omotaku members involved in extortion and harassment of motorists.

The arrests followed an incident involving a truck driver whose vehicle had broken down. The suspects reportedly accosted him, demanding money and his mobile phone, while threatening to cart away vital parts of his truck, including the battery, side mirrors and jack.

Acting on intelligence and during routine patrol, taskforce officials intervened and apprehended the suspects.

The Marwa corridor had earlier been identified as a hotspot for criminal activities, following repeated complaints from residents and motorists over incidents of theft, intimidation, and extortion by street urchins.

Responding decisively, the agency launched a targeted raid to restore order and ensure the safety of road users within the area.

This operation marks the second phase of an ongoing enforcement campaign, which commenced earlier in the week under the leadership of the chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele. The initiative underscores the Task Force’s commitment to rid the state of criminal elements and maintain public order.
