Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party with immediate effect.

Kwankwaso disclosed this in a statement dated March 29, 2026, citing the need for strategic political realignment in response to evolving developments in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.

The former governor expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve as its National Leader and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, describing his exit as a difficult decision.

He noted that the current trajectory of national politics required identifying with a platform that offers better prospects for pursuing meaningful change.

The development marks a significant shift in the political equation ahead of the 2027 general elections, with indications that Kwankwaso may soon align with another party.
