IPAC Condemns Alleged Attack on Peter Obi and John Odigie-Oyegun

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has condemned the reported attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi, former All Progressives Congress National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress in Edo State. The council described the incident as a dangerous escalation of political intolerance and warned that such acts threaten Nigeria’s democratic order.

According to IPAC, the alleged assaults occurred during a political event marking the formal entry of Olumide Apata into the African Democratic Congress. Vehicles with damaged windshields and a bullet-riddled gate at Odigie-Oyegun’s residence were reported, raising concerns over the safety of political actors and the increasing use of intimidation in partisan activities. The council urged the federal and state governments to investigate the incidents, ensure accountability, and bring perpetrators to justice.

IPAC emphasized that political contestation should be conducted through democratic processes rather than force or violence. It further warned that a culture of intimidation could set a dangerous precedent, undermining democratic stability and public confidence in governance. The council called on all stakeholders to uphold the principles of political tolerance, accountability, and peaceful competition, emphasizing the critical need to protect opposition figures and maintain a free political environment.
