Morocco Pushes for Jail Terms Against Senegal Supporters Over AFCON Final Unrest

Prosecutors in Morocco are seeking prison sentences of up to two years for 18 Senegalese fans arrested after disturbances during the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Rabat.

In court, the prosecution argued that the accused deliberately disrupted the match and engaged in violent behaviour that was captured during the live broadcast. The defendants rejected the claims and maintained their innocence.

The supporters have been held since the day of the final, which saw Senegal defeat Morocco 1–0. Tensions escalated late in the match when some fans attempted to enter the pitch and objects were thrown onto the playing surface, prompting a lengthy interruption.

Investigators said the case relies on surveillance footage from the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium alongside medical reports documenting injuries sustained by security personnel and stewards. Authorities also estimated that damage to the facility exceeded four million dirhams.

The incident has drawn attention as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, placing renewed focus on stadium safety and crowd control measures.
