Shehu Sani backs US military cooperation with Nigeria
Former senator Shehu Sani has defended security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, describing the presence of American troops in the country as necessary support in the fight against terrorism.
Sani said Nigeria cannot afford to reject international assistance while insurgents continue to threaten lives and communities. According to him, military partnerships are common worldwide and do not automatically compromise sovereignty when properly structured.
His remarks follow confirmation by the Defence Headquarters that about 100 US personnel and equipment recently arrived in Nigeria under a bilateral security arrangement aimed at enhancing technical capacity and counter-terrorism operations.
While some critics fear foreign troop deployment could weaken national autonomy, Sani argued that the greater threat comes from persistent terrorist activity and insecurity.
He stressed that cooperation with allies should be viewed as strategic support rather than external control, noting that even powerful nations rely on international defence partnerships.
