Proceedings in Senate Stall Over Motion to Rescind Clause in Electoral Act

The Nigerian Senate temporarily paused proceedings during clause-by-clause consideration of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026, following a motion to rescind a previously amended clause. The motion, seconded on Tuesday, prompted the Senate to enter a Committee of the Whole session for detailed reconsideration.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio began reviewing the clauses, but debate stalled at Clause 60 when Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe raised a point of order. This led to consultations and a closed-door session.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that the motion arises from concerns over the 2027 general elections timetable and inconsistencies in the legislation. The 360-day notice requirement in Clause 28 could conflict with Ramadan, potentially affecting voter turnout, logistics, and overall inclusivity. Other clauses, including 6, 9, 10, 22, 23, 28, 29, 32, 42, 47, 51, 60, 62, 64, 65, 73, 77, 86, 87, 89, 93, and 143, were identified as containing cross-referencing and numbering discrepancies.
