Tinubu Calls for Release of South Sudan Vice President, Urges Dialogue

President Bola Tinubu has called for the immediate release of detained opposition figures in South Sudan, including First Vice President Riek Machar, as part of efforts to restore political stability in the country.

The message was delivered by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a high-level African leaders’ meeting held alongside a continental summit.

Nigeria urged all parties to embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusive political processes, stressing that peaceful elections and national unity are essential to rebuilding trust and sustaining development in the country.

African leaders at the meeting reaffirmed their commitment to implementing the existing peace agreement while acknowledging delays in its execution. Regional bodies also proposed stronger mediation mechanisms to monitor compliance and resolve disputes.

Nigeria further pledged continued support for regional security cooperation, including maritime protection initiatives aimed at combating transnational crime in the Gulf of Guinea.
