Omokri Backs Electronic Transmission, Rejects Real-Time Requirement

Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has voiced support for electronic transmission of election results but argued that mandating real-time transmission nationwide is not practical.

During a television appearance, Omokri said electronic transmission enhances electoral credibility and should not be opposed. However, he stressed that Nigeria’s geographic size and inconsistent network coverage make real-time uploading of results difficult in certain remote areas.

He noted that similar logistical challenges were observed in other countries and referenced parallels with Nigeria’s last general elections, where electronic transmission was implemented but not uniformly in real time.

His comments come amid controversy surrounding amendments to the Electoral Act, particularly the removal of the phrase “real-time” from provisions related to results transmission. Critics argue that the wording change weakens transparency, while lawmakers maintain that electronic transmission remains part of the framework.

Addressing questions about accepting an ambassadorial appointment under President Bola Tinubu despite past criticisms, Omokri said his decision reflects a commitment to national service rather than political alignment.

He clarified that while he had previously expressed reluctance to work directly under Tinubu, he never ruled out serving Nigeria in another capacity. According to him, discussions with officials led to a role he believes aligns with his principles and dedication to the country.

Omokri also stated that his assessment of the president has evolved, expressing confidence in the administration’s leadership.
