Senate Demands Full Implementation of Defence Budget, Warns Against Delays

The Nigerian Senate has stressed the urgent need for the full and timely implementation of the nation’s defence budget, warning that delays could compromise national security and give advantages to insurgents and criminal elements.

During the budget defence of the Ministry of Defence, Senator Ahmed Lawan, chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, expressed concern over the slow execution of the 2025 defence budget. He noted that some budget allocations were not fully implemented and were instead rolled over into 2026.

“We cannot postpone defence spending because delays give the enemy an edge. Our armed forces must be equipped to protect lives and respond to security threats effectively,” Sen. Lawan said.

General Christopher Musa, Minister of Defence, acknowledged ongoing security challenges across Nigeria but reassured lawmakers that the ministry is committed to improving its operational performance. He credited the support of the National Assembly for progress achieved so far, emphasizing that proper funding and oversight are critical for tackling insecurity.

Sen. Lawan affirmed that the Senate is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in defence spending, highlighting the need for effective resource allocation to combat persistent security threats.
