Ex-Rep Praises Zulum’s Directive on Direct LG Funding in Borno

Sam Onuigbo, former member of the House of Representatives representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency in Abia State, has commended Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for ordering that local government allocations from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) be paid directly to the state’s 27 councils.

The governor’s directive, aimed at improving transparency and empowering council chairpersons to drive grassroots development, has been hailed by Onuigbo as a bold and principled decision.

In a statement personally signed and shared publicly on Tuesday, Onuigbo described the move as constitutional and aligned with democratic principles. He noted that it sets an example for other governors and supports President Bola Tinubu’s reform initiatives at the grassroots level.

“My attention was drawn to Governor Zulum’s directive for direct payment of monthly federal allocations to local councils. This is a commendable step toward transparency and empowerment of council chairpersons to fast-track local development,” Onuigbo said.

The former lawmaker, who serves on the Governing Board of the North East Development Commission, added that the action rekindles hope in Nigeria and validates his long-standing advocacy for financial autonomy for local governments. He further encouraged council leaders in Borno to use this opportunity to contribute meaningfully to addressing insecurity, youth unemployment, and social challenges.
