Senate Probes Declining Efficiency in Nigerian Railway Operations

The Senate has launched an investigation into operational inefficiencies and security challenges within Nigeria’s railway system following mounting complaints about service deterioration.

The decision followed concerns raised during plenary over worsening travel times and reduced service frequency on key rail corridors. Lawmakers noted that journeys which previously took significantly less time have now doubled in duration, undermining public confidence in rail transport.

An ad hoc committee has been established to conduct a comprehensive review of rail project execution, funding utilisation, operational efficiency, and overall service delivery. The panel has been tasked with submitting its findings within a defined timeframe.

Senators expressed frustration over the condition of major routes, particularly the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano corridor, citing poor execution and a lack of visible improvements despite substantial revenue generation. They also highlighted reduced daily trips and declining service reliability.

The investigation is expected to assess whether funds allocated to rail development have translated into tangible improvements, while also addressing safety concerns that continue to affect passenger confidence.
