Obi’s ADC Presidential Ambition Hinges on Atiku’s Exit — Former PDP Aspirant
A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Adamawa State, Umar Ardo, has said Peter Obi’s chances of securing the African Democratic Congress presidential ticket for the 2027 election depend largely on whether former Vice President Atiku Abubakar steps aside.
Speaking during a television interview, Ardo said Atiku currently holds a strong advantage within the ADC and would likely win the party’s presidential primary if it were held under present conditions.
He noted that while Obi remains a significant political figure, his emergence as the party’s candidate would be difficult unless Atiku withdraws from the race.
Despite this, Ardo acknowledged Obi’s electoral value, describing him as a major asset capable of mobilising millions of votes nationwide.
Obi formally joined the ADC towards the end of 2025 after extended consultations with party leaders. At a year-end political gathering in Enugu, he described his defection as the beginning of a renewed effort to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress and promote inclusive economic development.
The ADC has become the platform for a growing opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 elections, with prominent figures including Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark playing key roles within the party.
