BREAKING: Rivers Lawmakers Renew Push to Impeach Fubara, Deputy

Lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Ijaw axis have renewed calls for the reopening of the Assembly chambers to allow the continuation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

The legislators appealed directly to the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, urging him to reconvene the Assembly to formally resume legislative activities, including deliberations on the impeachment notice earlier served on the governor and his deputy.

The renewed push comes amid a shift in position by four lawmakers who had previously advocated a political resolution to the protracted crisis in the state. The lawmakers have now withdrawn from that stance, distancing themselves from any compromise arrangement and aligning with the impeachment process.

The Assembly had been expected to reconvene earlier in the week, but the sitting did not hold as scheduled. However, members later gathered at the conference hall within their residential quarters, where discussions centred on restarting the stalled impeachment proceedings.

Speaking on behalf of the group, lawmakers said their decision to proceed was driven by what they described as the governor’s continued refusal to address the constitutional concerns raised in the impeachment notice.

Two members of the House, Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, addressed journalists, announcing a reversal of their earlier call for political dialogue.

They stated that efforts at reconciliation had failed, adding that they were now fully committed to pursuing impeachment through constitutional means.

According to them, all legislative options remain open, stressing that the Assembly is prepared to carry out its duties in line with its mandate.
