SDP Leaders Consult Babangida, Abdulsalami in Minna

Senior officials of the Social Democratic Party have paid courtesy visits to former military leader Ibrahim Babangida and former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar in Minna, Niger State, as part of ongoing consultations with elder statesmen.

The party said the engagements were aimed at strengthening democratic values and seeking guidance from experienced national leaders on the country’s political direction.

During the meetings, the elder statesmen commended the party’s leadership for its commitment to democratic principles and urged political actors and citizens to work collectively to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic system.

They also offered prayers for national peace and economic recovery, expressing confidence that the country could overcome its current challenges with responsible leadership and unity.

Speaking after the visit, the party’s presidential candidate in the last general election said the discussions provided valuable insight and encouragement, describing the engagement as a positive step for Nigerians seeking credible political alternatives.

He noted that the next general election presents an opportunity for citizens to address insecurity, corruption, and poverty, stressing that effective and accountable leadership is critical to national renewal.

The party’s acting national chairman explained that part of the visit was to commiserate with one of the elder statesmen over recent personal losses and to seek prayers and goodwill for the party.

He added that the party has embarked on internal reforms and restructuring to position itself for a stronger showing in future elections, emphasising that political parties must demonstrate internal discipline to deliver good governance.

Other party leaders present called on the Federal Government to urgently tackle rising insecurity, warning that economic growth and democratic participation would remain constrained without improved safety across the country.
