US Immigration Authorities Detain Ghana’s Former Finance Minister
Ghana’s former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been taken into custody by United States immigration authorities over issues relating to his residency status, according to his legal representatives.
Ofori-Atta, who has been in the United States since early last year for medical treatment, including surgery, was reportedly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement while seeking to extend his stay.
His lawyers said he is fully cooperating with immigration officials and expressed confidence that the matter would be resolved promptly. Official records indicate that he is being held at a detention facility in the state of Virginia.
The former minister previously served in government between 2017 and 2024 and oversaw major fiscal reforms and negotiations with international financial institutions during his tenure.
