Kebbi ADC Condemns Malami’s Detention, Demands Release

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State has strongly criticized the continued detention of former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing it as political victimisation and a violation of the law.

Speaking at a press conference in Birnin Kebbi, the state chairman of the ADC, Sufyan Bala, alleged that the EFCC’s actions amounted to witch-hunting and selective enforcement of justice. He argued that the commission, as a creation of the law, must operate within constitutional boundaries and be seen to uphold fairness rather than act with bias.

Bala further claimed that Malami’s detention was part of a broader attempt to intimidate opposition members and coerce them into joining the ruling party. He emphasized that ADC members had resolved to remain steadfast in their political platform, which they view as essential for the country’s democratic survival.

He warned that democracy cannot thrive under fear, intimidation, and lawlessness, insisting that Malami’s detention contravenes the rights of citizens as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Bala demanded Malami’s immediate release, stressing that the EFCC must not be reduced to a political tool of the ruling party.

According to him, the arrest and detention of Malami appeared to satisfy the demands of certain political actors within the ruling party, but such actions would not resolve their internal challenges or prevent their decline.
