President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund, honouring Nigeria’s fallen heroes, wounded soldiers, and serving personnel. The event, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, recorded ₦320 million in donations, led by the President’s own ₦200 million contribution. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike followed with ₦100 million and ₦20 million respectively.

Tinubu said the annual remembrance—observed on January 15—must serve as a solemn reminder of the country’s obligation to those who sacrificed their lives for national unity. He praised troops for their bravery in confronting insurgency, terrorism, oil theft, banditry, and piracy, noting that their sacrifices have helped restore stability in many regions.

The President highlighted recent progress under ongoing security reforms, including increased surrender of insurgents, the neutralisation of high-profile terror leaders, improved joint operations, and strengthened maritime security. He also announced that the Ministry of Defence is developing a programme to reclaim ungoverned areas nationwide through the deployment of experienced retired military personnel. The initiative aims to secure vulnerable territories, restore state presence, and stimulate economic activity in previously unstable zones.

Tinubu also unveiled the “Thank a Soldier” QR code platform, which will allow Nigerians at home and abroad to send messages of appreciation to serving troops. He urged citizens to reject divisive rhetoric and promote unity, describing Nigeria’s diversity as a strength that must be preserved.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to military welfare, noting ongoing efforts to upgrade barracks, enhance allowances, expand healthcare services, and streamline pension verification. He added that reforms are underway to strengthen veterans’ benefits and support systems, including through the newly established Veterans Federation of Nigeria.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, senior government officials, and leaders of the armed forces and intelligence agencies.
