The Labour Party’s National Executive Council has reaffirmed that the leadership elected at the 2024 national convention in Nnewi remains valid. The NEC issued a formal resolution after its Abuja meeting attended by National Working Committee members, state leaders and officials of the electoral commission.

The NEC said it reviewed the controversies surrounding the 2024 convention, the ongoing litigations and the electoral commission’s position on the matter. It referenced recent Supreme Court rulings affirming that leadership disputes within political parties are internal affairs governed strictly by party constitutions.

According to the resolution, the officers elected in March 2024 remain in place, including National Chairman Julius Abure, Deputy National Chairmen Clement Ojukwu, Dr Ayo Olorunfemi and Esther Gulmu, along with National Secretary Umar Ibrahim. The council also filled several vacant positions and authorised preparations for special conventions and statewide congresses.

The party leadership praised the electoral commission for helping stabilise the party and thanked members and the media for supporting its efforts during the leadership crisis. The party’s former vice-presidential candidate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, said the party remains committed to welfarist governance and assured supporters that its mission for 2027 remains intact.
