Tensions Rise in Osun as Parties Scramble Ahead of Governorship Primaries

Political tension is deepening in Osun State as parties race toward the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission for submitting governorship candidates. The release of the timetable for the 2026 election has intensified activities across the state, with aspirants mobilising supporters while internal divisions unsettle major political parties.

The Peoples Democratic Party is battling leadership disputes that have complicated Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election plans. Although the governor has stated he will remain in the PDP, his earlier political engagements sparked speculation about possible defections. Insiders confirmed that discussions were held with other parties, including the African Democratic Congress, but disagreements over candidate selection stalled talks. Other platforms such as the All Progressives Grand Alliance and Accord were also considered. Former governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola said a final decision on Adeleke’s political platform would be taken after his return from a foreign trip.

The PDP’s leadership in the state has described Adeleke’s silence on his final decision as strategic, saying he has completed the necessary screening processes and remains eligible to contest under the party unless another decision is taken.

The All Progressives Congress is also experiencing internal friction, with about 13 aspirants seeking the ticket. Two main blocs—one aligned with former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and another loyal to former Deputy Governor Senator Iyiola Omisore—have emerged. Both camps have exchanged accusations, including alleged attempts to manipulate delegate lists. The APC Elder Caucus has urged aspirants to delay purchasing nomination forms while the party works toward consensus, although Omisore has already obtained his form.

The African Democratic Congress in Osun is also experiencing internal pressure ahead of its primary. A disagreement recently emerged after the Omoluabi Progressives group suggested zoning the governorship ticket to the West Senatorial District. Senator Kola Ogunwale rejected the idea, insisting that all districts should remain eligible. Potential aspirants include former Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, Senator Adelere Oriolowo, and former Speaker Najeem Salaam.

The ADC’s Director of Media maintained that the party remains united, noting that key factions participated in a recent constituency tour led by the National Secretary. He said preparations for selecting the party’s candidate are progressing smoothly.
