Nollywood Surges as ‘Gingerrr’ and ‘The Herd’ Drive ₦573 Million Box Office Boom

Two standout Nollywood films, Gingerrr and The Herd, have propelled Nigeria’s box office earnings to an impressive ₦573.2 million during the review period spanning late September through October 2025. This milestone underscores the rising popularity and commercial strength of locally produced films among Nigerian audiences.

Gingerrr, directed by Yemi Morafa and produced by Bolaji Ogunmola, Kiekie, and Bisola Aiyeola, made a powerful debut with ₦82.8 million. Within its first three days, it earned ₦78.9 million and surpassed ₦82 million by the end of its opening weekend. Six weeks post-release, the film has accumulated ₦435.5 million, positioning it among the highest-grossing Nigerian titles of the year. Its vibrant cast, including Bisola Aiyeola, Bimbo Ademoye, and Timini Egbuson, contributed to its appeal, especially among younger viewers drawn to its comedic tone and fast-paced action.

The Herd, directed by Etim-Effiong, premiered on October 17 and earned ₦28.8 million between October 17 and 19. By the end of its first week, it had reached ₦30.1 million, and three weeks later, its total climbed to ₦137.7 million. The film’s consistent weekend growth is a rare achievement for a non-December release, placing it in the same league as King of Boys and Brotherhood.

Gingerrr received a significant boost from Cinema Day on November 1, 2025, which saw a 5% increase in attendance compared to the previous year, despite ticket prices doubling from ₦1,000 to ₦2,000. It recorded the highest single-day ticket sales, outperforming international blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine and The Equalizer 3. The combined success of Gingerrr and The Herd contributed to one of the strongest months ever for Nollywood.

The Herd, co-produced by FilmOne Studios, ToriTori Films, Serendipity HHC, and Airscape, explores themes of love, family, and generational change set in South West Nigeria. Its blend of psychological tension and social commentary reflects the growing narrative depth of Nigerian cinema.

Other films also maintained a steady presence at the box office. Trons: Ares earned ₦13.8 million in its third week, bringing its total to ₦107.7 million. Idia added ₦7.4 million in its second week, reaching ₦18 million. New release Regretting You opened with ₦4.4 million, while Blackphone 2 brought in ₦3.8 million for a cumulative ₦23.8 million in its second week.
