$1.2 Million Stadium Project: Pinnick Refutes Allegations of Misuse

Amaju Pinnick, former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, has dismissed accusations of financial misconduct regarding the FIFA Goal Project in Kebbi State. He described the controversy as a result of misinformation and clarified that the project followed all required procedures.

The issue gained public attention after FIFA posted an image of the Kebbi Stadium on social media in 2023, showing the facility in an incomplete state. This sparked criticism from Nigerians who questioned the use of the $1.2 million allocated for its development.

Kabiru Amadu, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, explained that FIFA does not construct full-scale stadiums for countries, contrary to widespread assumptions about the Kebbi project.

In an interview on ARISE News, Pinnick defended the integrity of the project, emphasizing that FIFA enforces strict financial audits and standards. He noted that the contract was valued at $1.1 million in 2020, which amounted to less than ₦400 million at the time. He stressed that the agreement included no provisions for cost adjustments, even during the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Pinnick urged the public to seek accurate information before making judgments and reiterated his administration’s commitment to transparency and the advancement of Nigerian football.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has announced plans to establish a special committee to investigate grants totaling $25 million received by the NFF from FIFA and the Confederation of African Football.
