Rising Threats to Nigeria’s Railway Infrastructure Spark Passenger Anxiety

Frequent attacks and vandalism targeting the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have ignited growing concern among train passengers nationwide.

Despite repeated warnings from the NRC and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), government authorities and security agencies have remained largely silent, even as infrastructure continues to deteriorate.

One of the most alarming incidents occurred on August 26, when a passenger train traveling from Abuja to Kaduna derailed shortly after departure. The accident overturned several carriages and triggered panic among passengers, some of whom feared a terrorist attack. While the NRC initially blamed human error and excessive speed, the NSIB later attributed the root cause to neglected infrastructure.

Just weeks later, critical signalling equipment along the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge corridor was vandalized. Routine inspections revealed tampering with signal machine protectors and severed cables on a key switch point. Although operations continued uninterrupted, the NRC condemned the sabotage and called for urgent investigations.

Over the years, the NRC has reported widespread vandalism—from rail tracks to signalling systems—often carried out by scavengers. The Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, described the railway infrastructure as vital national assets and urged stronger protection measures.

Passengers have voiced their fears. Airin Adeojo, speaking from Ebute-Meta station, said, “I used to feel safe on trains, but now I travel with anxiety. Authorities need to overhaul both the rail lines and the trains.”

Another commuter, Ms. Remi, acknowledged past government efforts but emphasized the need for renewed investment. “Rail used to be the safest mode of transport. If the NSIB confirms infrastructure decay, the government must act swiftly. Prioritizing rail could transform our transport system.”
