United Nigeria Airlines Secures Six Boeing Jets in Strategic Growth Move

United Nigeria Airlines has signed an aircraft acquisition agreement with the United States-based Southwest Airlines for the purchase of six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet expansion strategy.

The agreement, announced at a signing ceremony at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters in Dallas, Texas, is aimed at positioning United Nigeria Airlines for broader operations across domestic, regional, and international routes.

According to the airline, the addition of the Boeing 737-800 aircraft—renowned for fuel efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort—will boost capacity, reduce operational costs, and support Nigeria’s aviation growth in alignment with national economic development goals.

The Boeing 737-800 has a range of approximately 2,935 nautical miles and can accommodate up to 189 passengers in a single-class configuration.

Executive Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, described the acquisition as a milestone:

“After four years of consistent and reliable operations, upgrading to the Boeing 737-800 enables us to scale profitably while offering enhanced travel options to Nigerians and other African passengers.”

He added that the agreement includes a long-term partnership with Southwest Airlines, covering technical support, maintenance cooperation, and crew training.

Okonkwo further disclosed that the six aircraft mark the beginning of a wider growth plan, with an additional four Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft already being considered. These would raise the fleet to ten aircraft, scheduled for delivery between Q1 2026 and Q1 2027.

“With this upgrade, we can operate more direct flights into approved destinations, cut down on long layovers, improve passenger experience, and enhance cargo operations at competitive fares,” he said.

He also highlighted the wider benefits, noting that the acquisition would create direct and indirect jobs in Nigeria while contributing to national economic goals.

Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Boeing Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed the partnership, describing it as a strong endorsement of the Boeing 737 family.

“We are pleased to welcome United Nigeria Airlines to the 737 family with its first 737-800. This aircraft offers the reliability, efficiency, and returns operators need in today’s aviation market,” Yitbarek said.

Both United Nigeria Airlines and Southwest Airlines confirmed ongoing discussions to expand their collaboration, with the U.S. carrier expected to continue providing support after the aircraft deliveries.
