Senate Committee Evaluates NDDC Road Projects in Cross River

The Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has begun an inspection tour of ongoing road reconstruction projects covering 32 kilometres across Akpabuyo, Akamkpa, and Biase Local Government Areas in Cross River State.

Among the projects under review are the rehabilitation of 20 kilometres of the Okomita–Uyanga–Ehom Road in Akamkpa and Biase, 1.5 kilometres stretching from Idundu Junction to Idundu Bridge in Akpabuyo, and 10.8 kilometres of the Aking–Osomba Road in Akamkpa. The construction works are being undertaken by Messers Faith Plant Nig. Ltd.

The oversight visit was led by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC and representative of Cross River South. He was joined by committee members, the commission’s Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, and Executive Director (Projects), Obong Victor Antai.

At the project sites, the delegation was received by the Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government, Felix Akposi, along with state lawmakers Okon Owuna and Linus Bassey, representing Akamkpa Constituencies 1 and 2 in the Cross River House of Assembly, as well as councillors from the affected communities.

Senator Ekpenyong described the roadworks as evidence of the NDDC’s renewed commitment to infrastructure development in the Niger Delta, stressing that the projects would serve as critical economic and social lifelines.

“These roads are vital corridors for transportation and trade. They will help connect communities, expand access to markets, improve schooling opportunities, and make healthcare facilities more reachable,” he said.

He further highlighted the Senate’s resolve to support the commission’s efforts. “The 10th Senate, under the leadership of His Excellency Godswill Akpabio, is fully committed to ensuring that these projects are executed to the best standards,” Ekpenyong assured.

The senator also applauded Governor Bassey Otu’s infrastructure drive, urging the NDDC to sustain its interventions across the Niger Delta.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Ogbuku reiterated the commission’s focus on delivering quality and lasting infrastructure.

“Our goal is to provide durable roads that will genuinely improve the lives of the people,” he stated. “These projects will ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic growth in Cross River State and the wider Niger Delta. We will maintain transparency, accountability, and collaboration with the Senate Committee to achieve timely completion.”
