Calls Grow for South-South INEC Chairman as Yakubu’s Tenure Nears End

Human rights lawyer and activist Monday Ubani has urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint the next chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the South-South region, as Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure ends in October 2025.

Ubani emphasized that the appointment should not only reflect geographical balance but also prioritize candidates with integrity, fairness, and independence—qualities vital to ensuring credible elections in 2027.

He pointed out that past INEC chairmen have largely come from northern regions, adding that a South-South candidate would promote fairness and national unity. Ubani argued that the role demands someone capable of managing the complexities of Nigeria’s electoral process without political bias.

There is growing pressure from civil society and opposition leaders for reform at INEC. Some have alleged that the 2023 elections were compromised, heightening calls for a more transparent and independent leadership ahead of the next polls.

INEC has also confirmed that over 110 new political associations have expressed interest in registering as political parties, signaling heightened political activity in the run-up to 2027.
