UN Mourns Buhari, Lauds Role in Promoting Peace in West Africa
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has expressed deep sadness over the passing of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, Guterres praised Buhari’s significant contributions to regional peace and stability.
“The Secretary-General is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement said.
“During his tenure, President Buhari demonstrated a deep commitment to the sovereignty, stability, and development of his country. He also played a key role in promoting regional peace and security in West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin.”
Guterres further commended Buhari’s strong advocacy for multilateralism and regional cooperation. He extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the Government, and the people of Nigeria during this period of national mourning.
In New York, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohammed, paid a personal tribute at the Nigeria House. Mohammed, who had previously served under Buhari as Minister of Environment and at the Petroleum Trust Fund, signed the condolence register and offered prayers for his soul.
Describing the late leader, Mohammed said: “He was a true patriot who believed in his country, believed in his people, and did the best that he could.”
She also praised Buhari’s unwavering discipline, deep conviction, and steadfast patriotism, adding that his legacy would transcend national boundaries.
Buhari died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a private clinic in London.
