Opposition Alliance Adopts ADC as Platform, Clarifies Merger Status

A coalition of Nigerian opposition figures—including notable names such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential elections. The coalition, unveiled in Abuja, is aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite speculation, prominent activist Aisha Yesufu clarified that the ADC did not enter a merger or coalition with other political parties; rather, it was simply chosen by the alliance as a suitable vehicle for opposition unity.

The move has sparked friction within ADC ranks. Dumebi Kachikwu, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, expressed concern about the coalition’s legitimacy, asserting that it aligned with a faction of the party whose mandate had expired. He criticized the group and urged a more formal process for integration.

Responding to his objections, Yesufu maintained that no political party can prevent others from adopting or joining it. Meanwhile, former Senate President David Mark has been appointed interim chairman of the ADC by the coalition, with Rauf Aregbesola serving as secretary and Bolaji Abdullahi as interim publicity secretary.

This development signals a significant effort by Nigeria’s opposition to consolidate and create a formidable challenge in the next general elections.
