Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection marks another instance of a sitting governor changing political allegiance while in office.
Over the years, several governors have switched parties, reshaping the political landscape. Below is a list of governors who have made similar moves:
Sheriff Oborevwori
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori recently made headlines by leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All-Progressives Congress (APC). Oborevwori, who won the 2023 governorship election under the PDP, was formally welcomed into the APC by top party leaders. His defection was confirmed during a press briefing by Senator Ebiowou Manager and Information Commissioner Aniagwu Charles, who noted its potential impact on the 2027 elections.
Aminu Tambuwal
The former governor of Sokoto State initially left the PDP for the APC while serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives. In 2018, he returned to the PDP and contested for the presidential ticket, which he lost to Atiku Abubakar, another politician who had also switched between the APC and PDP.
Other Sokoto governors who changed parties include:
- Attahiru Bafarawa – Moved from the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) to the PDP.
