Ex-Kaduna State Governor, Mal. Nasir el-Rufai, has accused his successor, Governor Uba Sani, of sycophancy and pandering to President Bola Tinubu for personal gain.

Mal. El-Rufai’s criticism followed Sani’s remarks during a live programme on Monday, where the Governor Sani expressed surprised at the growing criticism of Tinubu’s administration from some founding members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting through his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle yesterday, el-Rufai alleged that Sani’s unwavering support for Tinubu was reportedly linked to over N150 billion in federal reimbursements to Kaduna State in the past 18 months.

He wrote: “Every day I see this governor embarrassingly and sycophantically rambling, I used to wonder why?

However, confirming that the Federal Government ‘reimbursements, interventions, and grants’ in excess of N150 billion, El-rufai noted that the funds have been given selectively to Kaduna by Tinubu in the last 18 months now explains everything.

“By all means, defend Asiwaju for the conditional cash transfer. Asiwaju has earned it, coming from you. The people of Kaduna State will judge at the right time and place. Have a nice day.”

Sani, in the interview, had criticized some APC members for their public disapproval of Tinubu’s policies, describing their actions as “unfortunate and undemocratic.”

“I was really surprised when I heard the coalition of politicians coming together at this critical time to make most of those comments they made. Some of them were even calling for people to come out and take laws into their hands, oppose the government in a way that I feel is undemocratic,” the governor had said.

Challenging Tinubu’s critics, Sani urged them to wait for the 2027 elections if they believed they were popular enough to unseat the President.

Reacting, the Kaduna Peace and Unity Forum (KPUF) has accused the ex-governor of allegedly leaving “fraudulent and destructive legacies that left Kaduna in an indebted state.”

It passed a confidence vote on El-rufai successor, whom the members said is trying to reposition the state. In a statement issued yesterday by its Chairman, Dr David Bege Abraham, the group argued that el-Rufai lacked the moral right to accuse Governor Sani of working closely with the President to enjoy the Federal Government’s support to develop the state.

The forum defended the governor ‘on account of his civil approach to governance and his cordial and visionary leadership style that gave birth to a peaceful and relatively secured Kaduna today.”
