Ebonyi First Lady Frees 41 out of 1265 inmates

The wife of Ebonyi State governor, Chief Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzomaka Nwifuru yesterday released 41 inmates out of 1265 that are languishing in Abakaliki correctional centre.

ABUJA POST gathered that the release of the said inmates was part of a compassionate gesture of the wife of the governor, Mary-Maudline to celebrate with inmates in this 2024 Christmas season.

Speaking with newsmen at the Abakaliki correctional facilities shortly after releasing the inmates, the commissioner for justice and Anthony general of the state, Hon Ben Odo said that the Abakaliki prison facility is billed to accommodate 387 inmates, but is currently housing over 1265 individuals.

Odo said the release of the inmates by the Ebonyi First Lady, serves as a response to the overcrowding crisis that has plagued the correctional centre.

The Commissioner for Justice emphasized that the pressing need for reforms within the correctional system is to ensure appropriate care and justice for all inmates.

“This act of kindness aims to alleviate the burden on the facility and provide deserving individuals with a second chance at rehabilitation and reintegration into society”

” The First Lady’s visit and release of the inmates highlight the importance of addressing overcrowding and promoting rehabilitation efforts within Ebonyi correctional system” he said
