Umahi Says He Will Step Down If Road Project Fails Quality Checks

Minister of Works David Umahi has pledged to resign if independent tests reveal that the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway project does not meet required standards.

He made the declaration while presenting his ministry’s budget before lawmakers, following concerns raised about the contractor handling part of the project. Some legislators questioned the decision to award the contract to a firm they claimed lacked strong visibility in major road construction.

Responding to the criticism, Umahi insisted that the contractor’s previous business activities are irrelevant if the quality of work meets specifications. He challenged lawmakers to conduct comprehensive testing of the project and vowed to leave office if the results show substandard construction.

The minister emphasized that infrastructure durability depends on proper supervision and engineering standards rather than solely on whether concrete or asphalt is used.

Umahi also criticized the structure of capital releases from the finance authorities, arguing that inconsistent funding undermines timely project completion. He noted that the majority of projects under his ministry are ongoing and require steady financial support.

The session saw heated exchanges among lawmakers, though calm was eventually restored after interventions from senior members.
