Legal Showdown Looms as Turaki Bloc Battles INEC Over Wike’s Recognition

The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has strongly criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognising a caretaker committee loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The group described the commission’s action as unconstitutional and provocative, vowing to pursue all legal remedies.

In a statement issued by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the Turaki camp urged members to remain calm while the matter is resolved in court. He argued that INEC’s recognition of the Wike-backed committee was improper, especially with appeals still pending before the Court of Appeal.

On Thursday, INEC formally acknowledged the caretaker committee, presenting its Acting Chairman, Acting Secretary, and National Organising Secretary as the party’s representatives during a consultative meeting with political parties in Abuja.

The dispute stems from a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan last week, which nullified the PDP National Convention held on November 15, 2025. That judgment barred Turaki and his allies from parading themselves as national officers, despite support from PDP governors who had endorsed the convention and its outcome.

In response, Wike and his associates—including Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu—maintain their positions as Acting National Chairman and Acting National Secretary. Ahead of the expiration of former Chairman Umar Damagum’s tenure in December 2025, the Wike camp set up a 13-member caretaker committee with a 60-day mandate.

Welcoming INEC’s recognition, the Wike faction pledged to organise a fresh convention to elect new National Working Committee officials. Meanwhile, the Turaki-led bloc insists that the party’s constitution does not provide for such a caretaker arrangement and has promised to challenge the decision legally.

As the 2027 general elections approach, the PDP remains deeply divided, with both factions battling for legitimacy. The Turaki camp has assured members that its “Rebirth Movement” will withstand current challenges and ultimately present Nigerians with a stronger, united opposition to the ruling party.
