Rivers Assembly Members Urge Suspension of Fubara Impeachment Bid

Minority lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly have appealed to their colleagues to suspend ongoing impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Nma Odu.

At a media briefing in Port Harcourt, the House Minority Leader, Sylvanus Nwankwo, alongside Peter Abbey, who represents Degema, said appeals from elders, constituents and other stakeholders had prompted the call for restraint.

The lawmakers urged the Assembly to seek a political solution rather than proceed with impeachment, arguing that dialogue could help de-escalate tensions within the state.

Impeachment notices had reportedly been issued against the governor and his deputy over allegations of gross misconduct, including claims of unauthorised spending, interference with legislative funding, demolition of Assembly facilities and disregard for judicial rulings.

While Assembly leadership insisted that constitutional procedures were being followed, Governor Fubara maintained that he had not been formally served with any impeachment notice.

The development represents another chapter in the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, which has been linked to the fallout between the governor and his predecessor, now serving as a federal minister. Previous impeachment attempts were halted following high-level interventions.
