FG Sets Aside ₦142bn for Six National Bus Terminals in 2026 Budget

The Federal Government has proposed a ₦142 billion allocation for the construction of six national bus terminals in the 2026 fiscal year, as part of its broader public transportation development agenda.

The proposal is contained in the 2026 Appropriation Bill, which has a total projected size of ₦58.47 trillion. Under the bill, the Ministry of Transportation is allocated about ₦352.1 billion to execute various transport-related projects during the year.

The bus terminal project is listed under the National Public Transportation Programme and covers the construction of terminals and supporting transport facilities across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones. Budget details show a total provision of ₦142.03 billion for the initiative.

The terminals are planned for Abeokuta in the South-West, Gombe in the North-East, Kano in the North-West, Lokoja in the North-Central, Onitsha in the South-East, and Warri in the South-South.

The project had earlier received approval from the Federal Executive Council, with the contract awarded to a construction firm with prior experience in major transport infrastructure projects.

Officials say the terminals are designed to provide standardised facilities for intercity transport operations, improve passenger comfort, enhance safety standards, and support the modernisation of Nigeria’s public transport system.

If implemented as proposed, the project is expected to strengthen intercity mobility, reduce congestion, and improve the overall travel experience for commuters nationwide.
