As the 2025 Zenith Bank Final Eight playoffs intensify at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, First Bank Basketball Club head coach Juliana Akhere has her eyes set on the championship title.
The Elephant Girls earned their spot in the playoffs through the Atlantic Conference and have started strong, defeating Bayelsa Blue Whales 53-36 and Royal Aces of Abuja 52-44 to move closer to the semi-finals.
Akhere shared her thoughts, saying that every game is approached with full commitment. Despite facing obstacles, the team made quick adjustments and secured the win. She emphasized that the competition is fierce, with every team well-prepared and deserving of their place in the final eight.
Looking ahead, Akhere expressed her belief that reaching the podium is a result of divine guidance and the hard work invested by the team. She praised the unity within the squad, the teamwork, and the contributions of the coaching crew, especially Coach Seun, whom she described as fantastic. Akhere remains confident that her team will emerge victorious.
Day three of the playoffs will feature several key matchups. Bayelsa Blue Whales will face Royal Aces, with the winner likely to secure a semi-final spot. Dolphins Basketball Club will take on Nigeria Customs, while MFM will battle Titans Basketball Club. The final game of the evening will see First Bank go head-to-head with Air Warriors.
Meanwhile, Dolphins Basketball Club continued their impressive run by defeating Titans 63-39, following their earlier win over reigning champions MFM 51-41. Like First Bank, Dolphins are well-positioned to reach the last four.
Elsewhere, MFM Basketball Club of Lagos bounced back from their opening day defeat with a dominant 78-42 win over Nigeria Customs. Coach Ochuko Owolabi’s team showcased exceptional shooting, particularly from beyond the arc, and led from start to finish. Nigeria Customs, however, remain winless after two games.
Bayelsa Blue Whales also registered their first win of the playoffs by beating Air Warriors 65-47. Facing potential elimination, the Whales took control from the tip-off and maintained their lead throughout the game.
