LASTMA Introduces Drones for Traffic Monitoring and Security Surveillance in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has officially launched drone operations to enhance traffic monitoring, bolster security surveillance, and improve public safety across the state.

This initiative marks a transition from traditional traffic control methods to intelligence-driven, predictive operations powered by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

According to a statement by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, the deployment of drones will enable real-time aerial oversight, allowing for quicker interventions during traffic congestion, accidents, and emergencies.

General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the move as a watershed moment for traffic management in Lagos, stating that it will reduce travel times, minimize accidents, and foster a more disciplined motoring culture.

“This transition transcends the mere acquisition of equipment; it embodies a strategic reformation that positions LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance in traffic management,” Bakare-Oki said. “These drones will enable swifter interventions, improve safety outcomes, augment emergency response coordination, and reinforce public trust through strict compliance with privacy safeguards and ethical standards.”
