Wike Says FCT Overhaul Needs More Time

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called for public patience over the pace of development in Abuja, saying it’s unrealistic to expect a complete transformation of all sectors in just two years.

During a media briefing, Wike said his administration is working on a phased roadmap, addressing education, healthcare, and transport gradually rather than trying to fix everything at once.

He criticized the pressure to construct multiple schools and universities across communities, saying quality must come before quantity. “It’s not just about building structures,” he said. “We need to ensure they are functional and sustainable.”

On the state of hospitals, he explained that ongoing renovations are being carried out but noted that delivering fully equipped facilities in every district within a short timeframe is unfeasible.

Addressing transportation, the minister acknowledged the chaotic state of public transit in the city, while noting that efforts to reorganize the system are already underway.

He also responded to questions about the visibility of his appointees, arguing that media appearances should not define effective governance. Wike defended his leadership style, insisting that he maintains oversight and directly approves projects and funds.

Plans are underway to commission completed educational projects soon, though the minister noted that not every development requires a media spectacle. He said his focus remains on long-term impact over short-term applause.
