NANTA warns against visa scams, highlights red flags and solutions

The National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies has raised the alarm over visa fraud by unregistered travel agents, urging Nigerians to deal only with verified members.

Mr Olaleye Ajibade, NANTA’s Vice President for the Western Zone, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Saturday that those involved in visa scams were not genuine members of the association.

“People indulging in visa fraud are not our members. These quacks do not have offices; you won’t find them in any registered association. They meet clients in eateries or cars, places that make them untraceable after committing fraud,” Ajibade said.

He explained that NANTA works to eliminate impersonators and has partnered with state governments and security agencies to curb fraudulent activities. A disciplinary committee also addresses misconduct among agents.

To qualify as a member, a travel agency must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, attend NANTA meetings for a year, and hold certificates from both the association and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which must be displayed in their offices.

Ajibade cautioned that genuine travel agents do not promise visas, as consular offices alone issue them. “Visas are privileges, not rights. Travel experts guide travellers on preparing documents and provide information for positive outcomes,” he said.

He also listed red flags of dubious agents: unrealistic guarantees, requests for upfront payments, poor communication, unprofessional conduct, and lack of transparency.

As a safeguard, he advised travellers to verify requirements from official government sources, ensure documentation is genuine, and avoid unofficial payment channels.

“Research the country’s visa requirements and processes. Be wary of unsolicited offers or agents promising guaranteed visas,” Ajibade added.
